“Jesus looks at me again, and He says with a command— strong command: ‘No, it’s not your time. Go back.’ I felt like all of creation that was in front of me moved out of the way and said, ‘He’s not talking about me, He’s talking about you!’” American man Dean Braxton shares how he died for over an hour and traveled through Heaven, meeting Lord Jesus (vegetarian), his family, and all creation before being sent back with a mission.
Dean was a juvenile probation supervisor in Washington State [US] when a kidney stone led to a severe infection. During surgery, the infection spread; his heart and lungs shut down, and he was declared clinically dead for an hour and forty-five minutes. As his body failed, Dean felt almost no fear. He believed he was “going home.” Then he exited his body. “I remember leaving my body and really shooting through the hospital floors, and even going into the blue sky. And I remember going into outer space, and it was really fast. I remember reading this one scripture that says, ‘To be absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord.’ And all I could say was, ‘That was it, that was it, that was it!’ That’s what really happened— I was moving that fast. I would say faster than a person could blink their eye; by the time the top eyelid hits the bottom one, I was already in Heaven.”
Dean saw what looked like a window of light ahead and entered Heaven, where everything radiated peace and welcome. Even the trees and flowers seemed happy to see him.
“Everything was right, there was nothing wrong. It was peace. There was nothing that would agitate you there, nothing that would get on your nerves. And the thing that got me more than anything else was that I fit. I knew I was welcome there. Everything in Heaven literally was glad I was there.” But more than the beauty, Dean wanted to see Lord Jesus. Moving through a forest, he sensed Jesus beyond it, as the trees ushered him forward. “As I was going through those trees, they parted before me. And it felt like they were saying on either side of me, ‘He’s going to see the King! He’s going to see the King!’”
Finally, Dean entered a clearing, where he saw Lord Jesus standing among angels and billions of redeemed people, all gathered to praise and worship God. Overwhelmed, Dean fell to his hands and knees, staring at Lord Jesus’ feet and legs before finally seeing His face. The love radiating from Him struck Dean as utterly personal and utterly complete. “All I could say was, ‘You did this for me.’ And everything inside of me, everything about me at that moment, knew that the only reason I was in Heaven is because of what Jesus Christ had done. Everything was so grateful in my being, that He had done that for me, that the next thing I could only do was say, “Thank You, thank You, thank You, thank You, thank You, thank You. Mentally, I knew he had done it for everyone. But, personally, I took it on as so personal that You not only died on the cross so that I could be here, but You created all of Heaven just for me! I don’t want to say I was being selfish, because I wasn’t, but that’s what I felt like— He had done it just for me.
Everything about Him that I looked at loved me. His hands, they loved me. And then I got to His face. And He looked at me like I never, ever disobeyed Him in my entire existence. You know, that really got me. I read the Bible. It literally says that when God forgives you, He forgets it. I experienced that look from Jesus.” Dean understood he was an eternal being and that Lord Jesus’ love would outlast everything. Lord Jesus then downloaded knowledge into him before saying gently, “No, it’s not your time. Go back.” But when Dean approached the exit of Heaven, he sensed his physical body wasn’t ready yet. Overjoyed, he turned back and explored Heaven again. He traveled across landscapes where mountains moved like ocean waves and waters glowed vibrant blue. Animals lived there, too. After Dean circled back to Lord Jesus, immersed in a wrapping Light emanating from Him, Lord Jesus again told him it wasn’t his time. Dean traveled through Heaven some more. Then on his third return to the Lord, Dean finally noticed a vast company of his family— generation after generation.
“I saw my grandmother Mary. Behind her were other relatives, and then behind them were relatives. And it was generation after generation of all those that had a connection with Jesus Christ and the Father.” Dean was amazed to see relatives in Heaven he never thought would be there, realizing they had met God’s standards even if they hadn’t met his. He also learned how important family truly is. “I got to see my entire family in Heaven, smiling and enjoying each other so much. I didn’t know that family was like that in Heaven. I had thought we were all the family of God and we all would see each other. But you guys, the reality of it is, family is important to God, and I came to understand that.”
After more spiritual downloads, Jesus commanded him one final time. “Jesus looks at me again, and He says with a command— strong command: ‘No, it’s not your time. Go back.’ I felt like all of creation that was in front of me moved out of the way and said, ‘He’s not talking about me, He’s talking about you!’ And my grandmother Mary is there, and she says, ‘Bring as many of us back with you as you can.’ And she’s talking about my entire family here on the planet Earth. So I bowed before Jesus like this, went over those trees again, got to what I call the edge of Heaven, took a step, and I was out and headed back to this realm.”
Dean found himself back in the hospital hovering over his body just as the doctor was signing his death certificate. Re-entering quickly, his heart monitor began beeping again and medical staff rushed to revive him. Back on Earth, Dean struggled with the sadness of leaving Heaven. But his perspective on life permanently changed. “I didn’t really want to come back, but I felt like He [Lord Jesus] was saying, ‘I need you there more than I need you here.’ And how did I change: I look at things from an eternal point of view. I don’t have the same ‘grasp’ as I did before on things. And what I mean by that: holding onto things. It’s not that I’m free to let them go, because I know we need them here on the planet, but if they go, I don’t grieve over them.” (The Other Side NDE)
Uplifting quote of the day: “The sooner we let go of holding on, the sooner we can hold on to the beauty of what’s unfolding before us. Nothing was ever meant to stay the same forever.” — Julieanne O’Connor American Author
