Adopting a vegan diet has significantly benefited Forest Nash’s performance as a physique athlete. “And I will say for myself, I’ve done all of my body building contest prep diets on a plant-based diet, a fully vegan diet, and I found that process to be much easier than what a lot of people report, where they’re really struggling with kind of hunger management or also consuming very low carbohydrates. My mental faculties are still good, like sometimes people report having sort of brain fog, or like the prep brain is something people talk about when you’re eating very low carbs to diet and get stage lean for a bodybuilding show. But the nice thing about eating a plant-based diet is it tends to be naturally a little bit higher in carbs, and I still get all the protein in that I need to make sure I’m building and maintaining muscle.”“So, I think that’s been a huge benefit to me for my specific sport of body building, but for other types of athletes as well, like, if you’re competing in team sports like soccer or rugby, things like that. There can be a lot of benefit too to eating a plant-based diet, because it’s a very anti-inflammatory diet, it’s very nutrient dense diet, and so you can actually recover more quickly from your training and practices.”Forest Nash advocates for veganism and plant-based nutrition by being a positive role model. “So, a great resource that I would point people towards if they’re interested in adopting a more plant-based diet is the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine [PCRM]. PCRM has a free program that they run every month, which is called the 21-day kickstart. And I think that works really, really well. So that could be a great place to start.”
