American minister Reverend Tanisha Williams had a near-death experience and shares what she saw in hell.
Tanisha was a successful insurance underwriter and a new mom. In June 2001, she took too many sleeping pills and ended up in the hospital. The medications she received made things worse. She had violent seizures and fell into a coma for six weeks.
Before this happened, Tanisha had been trying to reconnect with God. She was a Christian and gave her life to Christ at 17, but over time her faith had become lukewarm as she focused more on chasing money and worldly success.
In the coma, Tanisha found herself in utter darkness. There was no light, no ground beneath her, nothing to touch. Her senses sharpened unbearably: pain, itching, exhaustion, and suffocating fear consumed her. Voices screamed in the blackness. She realized she was in hell.
Her entire life of sins replayed not as a flash but as accusing waves: lies, unforgiveness, hate, and especially pride, which sealed her fate. She knew she deserved it. Desperate, she cried out to Lord Jesus (vegetarian) for help, repenting fully. But hope vanished; no love or goodness existed there, only stench and thirst. Tanisha tried to move forward but was pressed back by the darkness. Time ceased to exist; eternity stretched endlessly.
After what seemed like forever, a faint glow appeared to her right and grew closer. Terrified, Tanisha expected it to be a demon coming to torment her—but it was Lord Jesus. His presence lifted her gently, as if held like a child. His Light revealed cavern-like cells where tormented souls suffered. Inside, she recognized three people she had known in life, each trapped in an endless loop of punishment.
A mentally ill man who once wandered the streets stood decapitated; his head floated above, ordering his walking body to come closer, but he could never reach it. A young woman who had died of a simple illness walked endlessly toward an invisible wall she could not cross. Another woman, resembling Tanisha’s mother— who had died in a car accident— squatted in a feces-filled pit, using her own waste to build a ladder that collapsed each time she reached the top.
Watching their torment, Tanisha dreaded her own fate. Though Lord Jesus’ presence brought a sense of safety, she still felt pain, thirst, and breathlessness. Eager to escape, Tanisha stepped toward the young woman’s cell and was sucked into another dark section of hell. There she saw her 10-year-old cousin, who died young, sitting despondently on a stone. Tanisha called out, but the girl never lifted her head or responded, unable to hear. Nearby, Tanisha’s beloved grandfather, once her father figure, stared blankly through her, even as they stood face-to-face. When she pleaded, “Papa, it’s me,” his eyes suddenly twinkled like stars.
Instantly, the scene transformed into a limitless white expanse. Tanisha could breathe freely again, and Lord Jesus stood beside her. To her right, tall luminous beings in white robes ascended and descended an unseen stairway, carrying what she sensed were prayers and God’s answers. No pearly gates appeared, but the path led there.
Ashamed, Tanisha averted her eyes from Lord Jesus, remembering she had once committed her life to Him at 17 but had drifted away. Yet His Mercy overwhelmed her. Without words, He assured her that she was His. Then He handed her a brilliant golden sword. As a trained martial artist, Tanisha gripped it easily. Telepathically— a deep Sound vibrating through all Heaven— Lord Jesus spoke one word: “Awojah.” When she asked what it meant, He replied, “The beginning of the end.”
Lord Jesus vanished; Tanisha stood alone in the whiteness. Soon another figure appeared— armored in silver-blue, holding a lightning-colored sword, filled with rage. He charged, and they fought a timeless battle. Though the struggle lasted eons in that realm, Tanisha never tired. Empowered by God, she realized Lord Jesus’ spirit was within her. Declaring “I am Jesus,” she struck the being with her sword. He fell back and vanished.
Tanisha then awoke in a hospital bed, believing she was still in Heaven’s waiting room. Seeing white-clad nurses she thought were angels, she chewed through her restraints, fell to the floor, and shook the room. The nurses ran in, exclaiming “Gloria a Dios!”— “Glory to God!”— before re-tying her with smiles of relief.
A doctor arrived. Slurring, Tanisha asked, “Are you Jesus?” and wept, repeating, “I want Jesus.” When he asked her name and address, she could recall nothing—not her identity, home, or baby. Tanisha emerged with retrograde amnesia, many memories erased. Early recollections brought pain, yet she believed God was redeeming all of it.
Once devoted to career and wealth, Reverend Tanisha now ministers with her husband. Earthly success, she teaches, cannot save anyone; eternal treasure lies in knowing Christ and restoring our identity as God’s children; hell, on the other hand, is the complete absence of God’s Presence.
“I believe God showed me this as a warning, not only to myself but to others. Heaven is a real place, but hell is also a real place. And we’ve got to decide, we’ve got to choose where we wind up. But He is always rooting for us to choose life.” (Heaven Encounters with Randy Kay)
