If we say we are disciples of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, then in any situation we must respond only with Love. Using Love does not mean that if our child behaves badly – stealing, hitting others – we don’t scold them. We must discipline them. So we have to take care of them because we love them. Because we want them to have a peaceful, beautiful, and noble life, which is why we teach them principles and moral values. When they make mistakes, we need to scold and correct them to make sure they understand that it’s not right. […] But you must let them feel love. You can’t just keep punishing without any affection at all – that won’t work. Otherwise, they’ll think you hate them, understand? Sometimes laws are made only for bad people, to restrain those with bad intentions. If we are good and have good intentions, we must do what is right. Even if we die, we still must do it – not stand there talking about laws. Just an example. Like two monks walking past a river, and they see a girl about to drown – they must rescue her. (Yes.) Standing there saying, “I am a monk. I can’t touch a woman.” If she dies, what kind of compassion is that? (Yes.) Just an example. What Buddha or Heaven would punish monks for saving a drowning girl? (Yes.) But if we don’t save her, Heaven and Buddha will probably punish us – because we have no compassion. For considering a human life smaller than our own reputation. […]
