American former art professor and Christian minister Reverend Howard Storm shares his near-death experience in which he saw hell and then Heaven, turning him from a staunch atheist into a believer. In 1985, Howard suffered a perforated intestine while in Paris [France] and endured ten hours of agonizing pain due to the lack of a surgeon. Told he had only an hour to live, he tearfully said goodbye to his wife and lost consciousness. Dying felt surprisingly peaceful.
Howard awoke standing beside his hospital bed, feeling more alive and healed than ever, with enhanced senses and a sensation of floating. Though he saw his wife crying and his own body lying motionless, he denied it, believing it must be a wax dummy. Attempting to communicate, he found himself invisible and unheard.
Then voices called his name from the hallway. Howard stepped into a fuzzy, gray corridor, where indistinct figures urged him to follow, claiming they knew him and were waiting for him. Assuming they were hospital staff, he followed them on a long journey into darkness. This led to a hellish realm— a place of separation from GOD, devoid of beauty, nature, or joy. There, hundreds of demons tormented Howard physically and emotionally for their amusement.
Desperate and broken, a voice within urged Howard to pray. Though long estranged from faith, he began reciting fragments of childhood prayers like “The Lord is my Shepherd” and “Our Father.” The demons reacted with rage and slowly withdrew. Left alone in the blackness of hell, Howard reflected on his selfish, ego-driven life and judged himself harshly, grading himself with F’s and D’s for failing his family, students, and others.
In the depths of despair, a childhood song— “Jesus Loves Me”— surfaced in his memory. Howard cried out, “Jesus, please save me!” Instantly, an unimaginably bright Light appeared, and Lord Jesus (vegetarian) emerged and embraced him. Love and joy overwhelmed him as Lord Jesus healed his broken spirit, calling him his favorite— just as every soul is. Together, they ascended to a Heavenly Realm of dazzling Light.
Howard feared he didn’t belong in Heaven due to his past denial of GOD. Telepathically, Lord Jesus assured him, “We don’t make mistakes; you belong here,” revealing He knew all of Howard’s thoughts. Surrounded by angels, Howard underwent a holographic life review, witnessing his interactions and their emotional impact on others. The angels expressed disappointment, not anger, at his manipulative, self-centered life, emphasizing that humanity’s purpose on Earth is to love one another. His achievements— professorship, awards, wealth— meant nothing compared to his failure to love.
Howard asked Lord Jesus many questions and learned that the Universe is filled with intelligent, loving beings; that aborted or stillborn babies get another chance at life; and that people often don’t realize when they’ve died, feeling relief instead. Lord Jesus emphasized that what we find in life is what we carry in our hearts— love or cruelty. Though Howard begged to stay, Lord Jesus insisted he return to Earth to live the life he was meant to, promising he’d find love and beauty if he sought it.
Back in the recovery room, a mysterious young man in green scrubs promised Howard he would watch over him through his long recovery, then vanished. When Howard asked a nurse about the “doctor,” she insisted no one had entered, as she’d been watching the door. This Angelic encounter solidified Howard’s transformation— from atheist to a man guided by faith, filled with love and hope, and trusting GOD for eternal salvation (Shaman Oaks)
