No one likes being sick, including your pet-family members. Here’s a tip for treating and preventing pressure sores in dog-people recovering from sickness or surgery. Reducing pressure on the affected area is the most effective way and you can do so by repositioning them regularly. If they are unable or unwilling to move on their own, gently change their position every two to three hours, or more frequently if recommended by your veterinarian. Provide a high-quality orthopedic bed, such as one made of memory foam or crate foam, to distribute your canine friend’s weight more evenly and reduce pressure on the skin. If you apply blankets or pads beneath them, make sure they are smooth and free of wrinkles to avoid forming additional pressure points. Use pressure-relieving supports like foam wedges, blocks, or donut-shaped cushions. These can be used to prop your furry friend and help reduce pressure on affected areas. For example, by positioning a wedge beneath the bedding, this can help shift weight away from a sore. Since every dog-individual has different needs, consult your veterinarian before using these supports to ensure they’re positioned safely and effectively. Lastly, check your dog companion’s skin daily and keep it clean and dry to reduce irritation and infection.
